Characterful, stylish (Lotus Cortina stripe, yeah!) and utterly reliable.
First owned by a well-known Australian
artist who bought it to tour Europe, the original purchase receipts from M-B in Australia & Germany confirming this. He
designed and specc'ed the interior himself, then commissioned Westfalia to do the conversion for him. All the original documents
from M-B and Westfalia are present, right down to the electrical blueprint!
I emailed him about the van a few months
ago - he said (quote from his reply) "... I was very sad to let it go ... It became my closest relation!
The van was
always very special to me and I hope it now has a good home, when I had it I never wore shoes inside nor allowed people to
smoke inside"
He toured all over Europe on his frequent visits (the service stamps show services in Italy, France,
Germany & Spain as well as the UK) until selling it in 2003. I bought it last year, having known - and coveted! - it since
seeing it when it last changed hands. I'm pretty certain that this is the only Westfalia-converted 508D in the UK, if not
Europe.

Bad stuff:
She's
definitely in need of some interior tlc and a rubdown around the arches and elsewhere (this is an annual job with Merc trucks
- keep on top of it & she'll last for ever, neglect it and watch her bloom before your very eyes... Some leftover paint
is included so you can get a match).
The bottom of the driver's door and rear doors needs repair sections
letting in. The interior paint scheme is NOT to everybody's taste (or indeed anybody's taste),
but the interior is original and pretty complete under the somewhat garish brushpaint. I can't say whether the fridge works,
either, as I've never tried to use it.
This is all surface/cosmetic stuff though, she's an amazing vehicle, she turns
heads, clears paths in traffic and even has an optional cowbell in place of the stolen 3 point star. She just flew through
the MOT with no advisory notices: I asked the examiner if there were anything I ought to look out for over the coming year
and he said no! He was surprised... I wasn't! I really cannot stress how well she has been looked after.
She owes me
over £6.5k, advertised on Ebay for £5k, but I'm open to offers as I absolutely have to shift her by the weekend or I'll have
to sell a kidney. Seriously. If she goes for £3.5k I'll also throw in 6 month's road tax.
