1978 Commer/Dodge PB Motor Home.
This lovely motor home was built by the Caravans International company in
Parkstone Dorset. Known as the CI Auto-Home it was a very popular conversion when new and many were sold not just on the Commer
chassis but on the Bedford CF and Ford Transit as well. Even now some 33 years after production of this model ceased the CI
is still very well respected and sought after especially on the Commer chassis as Commers are now "tres chic"
and prices have risen and continue to rise sharply.
This CI has covered just
75000 miles from new and has 23 years worth of old Mot certificates as well as many years of service history. The camper has
a current Mot through to April next year and will be sold with 6 months road tax.
The
CI has a high level of equipment, for 1978!, which includes sleeping for 4 adults, a gas fridge, a gas fire, a 2 burner hob
and grill, a sink with tap, a toilet compartment with a porta potti, a wardrobe, a free standing table, an on board water
tank, 240 volt mains hook up, interior lighting, a ladder to give access to the "upstairs" berths, an ingenious
folding rear step that acts as extra security for the rear door and lots of storage. The cushions and seats were all recovered
a few years ago and are in excellent condition. The whole interior is very nice, clean, cosy and a pleasure to be in at any
time of year.
The overall condition of the cab and body is good, especially for
its age, the coachbuilt section of the camper is alloy so there are no problems with rust or rot, the cab area is good but
could do with some attention/improvement in the future. There is some rust on the bottom of the drivers doors and on the rain
channel at the front of the cab, its nothing terrible but would benefit from being sorted out.
The van starts and drives well, its not a modern machine so please do not expect to drive at motorway speeds, its
happiest at 50/55mph and will cruise along happily all day at that, and please bear in mind that the CI does NOT have power
steering or power brakes and it has a choke! remember them?
The brakes have recently
had an extensive overhaul including new pipes, cylinders and shoes as well as fresh brake fluid, this camper also has the
benefit of electronic ignition fitted so no worrys about changing points and condensor.
This is a lovely old motor home that can be used straight away, spare bedroom for xmas? It would benefit from some
cosmetic attention to the cab but nothing you could not easily do yourself and nothing that stops the camper being used and
enjoyed.
